Paths to Professions

Interested in becoming a weatherization professional? Need to update your current weatherization skills or earn certification? Through the BPC’s proven training programs, you’ll learn new skills in hands-on labs. Our trainers are weatherization experts with decades of experience in the field.

Retrofit Installer Technician

The Retrofit Installer class is designed to provide weatherization technicians the basic weatherization skills to install materials for a weatherization retrofit in accordance with the Washington State Department of Commerce Weatherization Specifications and Department of Energy Workforce Guidelines for Home Energy Upgrades. A weatherization retrofit is the installation of energy saving measures such as insulation and air sealing in an existing home. The retrofit work often takes place in confined spaces such as attics and crawlspaces. Attendees should dress in clothes appropriate for weatherization work and bring respirators fitted with acid vapor cartridges. We will be working with insulation and foam. See our courses page to register.

Crew Leader

The Crew Leader course is specifically for technicians that have weatherization retrofit experience and have Retrofit Installer skills and knowledge. A Crew Leader is designed to assist technicians in reinforcing diagnostic skills, estimating skills and job management skills. Working “smart” and understanding the critical details of an effective weatherization retrofit ensure safe, efficient, and durable energy retrofits.

Building Analyst

In Washington State, auditors working for state-funded weatherization programs are required to become BPI certified or have their work supervised by a BPI certified analyst. See our BPI Building Analyst Certification paths to certification page for a list of courses and study plans.

Energy Auditor

The Energy Auditor course is for people who already have some experience in field weatherization and home performance. This training will prepare you to conduct home energy audits using advanced diagnostic equipment and energy modeling software in order to develop an audit report. Students in this course will learn how the house operates as a system and become familiar with the identification and prioritization of energy, health, and safety measures typically associated with weatherization and minor home repair projects. Energy Auditor training prepares individuals for the Building Performance Institutes’ Energy Auditor certification exams.

Quality Control Inspector

Quality Control Inspector training prepares individuals to verify that completed weatherization work meets applicable standards and that work completed aligns with developed works copes. Quality Control Inspectors are required to hold a Building Performance Institute (BPI), Energy Auditor certification.
